Exercise 1 Listen to these comments made about a variety of subjects. In each case, note what the speaker is commenting on and whether the comment is positive or negative.*
A: Have you had enough?
B: Yes, thank you. It was delicious.
A: What did you think of the film?
B: I thought it was awful. I found it really violent.
A: What do you do?
B: I'm an analyst in the city.
A: That must be very demanding.
A: He works so hard.
B: I agree. I think he sets a bad example. He never leaves the office before nine o'clock.
A: …and this guy said to Peter, ‘Which way now?'and Peter said, ‘You've got the wrong address. You'll have to go back the way you came!'
B: (laughs) That's very funny.
A: Did you hear the news about the tax increases?
B: Yes I did. Isn't it depressing?
A: She's a lovely woman. She's just a bit shy - it takes time to get to know her.
B: Yes, I've heard that. Is she coming tonight?
A: So what line are you in?
B: I'm a security consultant.
A: Oh, that sounds interesting.
A: Did you see that play on television last night?
B: Yes I did. It was intriguing, but I'm not sure I found it very believable.
A: Really? I did.
A: I got through my law exams.
B: Well done! So what's the next step?
A: A job, I hope.
