1.“know sb. by sth.”是“凭某物知道/认出某人”的意思,例如:She looked very different. but I knew her by her voice.(她看起

2.“a series of”意为“一系列的,一连串的”,例如:He was discouraged after a series of defeats.(经过一连串的失败之后,他泄
气了。)
3.“(给某人)做演讲”的表达为“give(sb.)a lecture”。

澳大利亚人讲究礼貌,待人彬彬有礼,人们相见总是热情打招呼,握手致意,彼此称呼对方的名字,男女老幼,均是如此。在社交场合,澳大利亚人显得非常随和,喜爱同陌生人交往。可以说,在人际交往方面,澳大利亚人不像英国人那样让人觉得比较疏远。
澳大利亚俗礼仪在许多方面却又同英国十分相似:澳大利亚人的姓名同英国人的一样,名在前,姓在后;可以以姓名、职称、头衔或冠以先生、女士等称呼来称呼对方;见面握手是一种最普遍的打招呼方:式,拥抱亲吻的情况不太常见;社会上都有“妇女第一、女性优先”的理念:都非常注重公共场所的仪表,男子大多数不留胡须,出席正式场合时身着西装革履,女性则是身着正式裙装。
澳大利亚人待人接物都很随和。邀请澳大利亚人到家中做客,他们总是随身带一些礼物,用来表示友好。如在自家花园里摘几朵鲜花或拿一瓶自家确制的果酱等。澳大利亚人招待客人的饭菜与英国大致相同,油少清淡,量少而精,讲究花样,注意色、香、味、型,而且调味品众多,进餐者可以根据自己的口味选用。澳大利亚人的时间观念很强,约会必须事先联系并准时赴约。
